$26.4 million in park grants awarded

Posted on Thursday 26 October 2006

Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today announced $26.4 million in grants for dozens of projects at existing parks and development of new parks throughout Northern Illinois. The funds, made available through the Open Space Land Acquisition Development (OSLAD) Program, will be used for 73 projects in Northern Illinois including land acquisition, construction of new trails and playgrounds, and the creation of new recreational opportunities including athletic fields and fishing piers.

“Illinois is a beautiful state and enjoying the outdoors is a key to our quality of life. These grants we’re announcing today mean people in Northern Illinois will have even more opportunities for recreation and tourism in part because of the grants we are announcing today,” said Gov. Blagojevich. “Whether it’s setting aside land to ensure future park development, expanding existing parks or building trails and picnic shelters, these projects not only add to the quality of life in our communities, but can also spur more economic growth.”

It is great that the OSLAD program was saved so that there will continue to be state dollars devloted toward the preservation of open space. Thank you to all of the professionals who fought so hard for this funding to continue. There have been a number of budget cuts as the leadership on the state level has continued to place a freeze on tax increases as a priority - OSLAD was sure to be one of them. It is a testament to the quality of the professionals in this state and the priority that the citizens of Illinois place on open space. Congratulations to all of the agencies that will recieve this money for their projects! Our professionals continue to help their communities advance!

Please note, I have received word from Steve Gonzalez of the IDNR that the total amount of OSLAD funding granted to the entire state was $32.9 million. In addition to the Northern Illinois agencies, a number of Central and Southern agencies will also be receiving grant money.

Please read other press releases from the IDNR to learn more.
