Today the Chicago Tribune reported:
A pest blamed for killing millions of trees across the Midwest has reached Illinois, prompting state officials to prepare a detection and eradication plan they expect to begin within the next few weeks, the state agriculture department said Tuesday.
The emerald ash borer, which feeds on the leaves and wood of ash trees, was found recently by a homeowner in a rural subdivision near Lily Lake, about 40 miles west of Chicago in central Kane County, said Warren Goetsch, division manager for natural resources in the agriculture department. But it’s possible the pest has been in trees there about 35 miles from the Wisconsin border as long as five years and has spread.
Back in theMay 30 “Protect Your Ash” post, The Blog Spot posted news of the EAB coming to Illinois and some of you have commented back alerting us that it’s here…in your trees.
Email The Blog Spot pictures of any infected trees you’ve seen so others know what to look for.
I believe I found EAB infested trees in the city of Chicago at 5801 S Mayfield. I called the forestry dept of Chgo, but I don’t think they did anything.
