Glenview Lifeguard is Hero

Posted on Tuesday 11 July 2006

Thanks to quick action and proper training Glenview Park District lifeguard Mike Galeno saved the life of a 6-year-old boy at Glenview’s Roosevelt pool on Monday. The incident occurred in only 4′6″ deep water during daycamp activity where 9 camp counselors and 12 lifeguards were on duty watching the 45 campers. The boy was taken to Evanston Hospital where he was conscious and treated.

Quotes from Galeno pulled from the Chicago Tribune article:
“Myself and the other manager, Scott, got there immediately and pulled him out,” he said. “Right away, the training we’ve been going through for a long time kicked in. I knew right away to look, listen and feel for breathing, saw he wasn’t breathing, and I gave two rescue breaths and he started to respond a little bit to the rescue breaths, so I gave him two more.”

“In about two seconds, he started to cough up some foam, his eyes were going nuts, and you could tell that he was responsive.”

“At that point, the child woke up,” said the park district official. “Became fully conscious and began crying, which in this case is a good sign, and shortly thereafter, the fire department arrived and took over from there.”

Thanks to the training park district lifeguards receive throughout the summer accidents like this usually end positively. Great job Mike!

Awesome job! People at park districts throughout the state practice and practice these skills day in and day out hoping that they will never have to use them. It’s good thing that these skills are practiced becuase you never know when you will have to use them!!!
