Hurricane Katrina has cut a wide swath across the Southeast, South and middle of our nation leaving New Orleans in a state of despair. Our thoughts and hearts are with all of the impacted.
Many of you have contacted us, asking what you can do to help. IPRA has been working with the American Red Cross since 2001 and have been told that monetary donations to the relief effort would be your best avenue to help those in need. The Red Cross is dealing with the greatest natural disaster it has ever faced in our nation, and has provided the information below for those who want to help.
Here are three ways to donate:
- Call 1-800-HELP NOW
- Make a secure online donation at redcross.org
- Send a check or money order to American Red Cross, International Response Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 (designate Hurricane Katrina relief)
Here in Illinois, professionals in the field of parks and recreation are lending a helping hand toward the relief effort. On Saturday, September 3, the DNR Office of Law Enforcement sent 12 officers to help in the disaster area of Louisiana. They arrived Sunday, September 4th at Hammond and are currently staying in a college dorm. Each day they get orders for where they are going and what they will be doing for that particular day. We sent six two-person teams equipped with a 18′ boat and all the equipment they will need for this operation.
The 12 officers involved in this operation are: Deputy Chief Chuck Redpath, Captain Greg Hunter, Lt. Eric Bumgarner, Sgt. Glenn Sanders, Sgt. Curt Lewis, Conservation Police Officers Kim Rhodes, Scott Avery, Paul Morelock, Steve Vasicek, Jon Davis, Bill Cottrell and James Mayes. Our thoughts and prayers are with them for a safe return home.
Please feel free to share your stories with us. How have you helped? Is your agency planning to house evacuated residents of the devastated area?
The Streamwood Park District will be hosting a Hurricane Katrina Benefit Swim to help all the victims of the hurricane. The event will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Park Place family Recreation Center indoor Aquatic Center (550 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood). The cost is $3 per person and no passes or memberships will be accepted. The Park District will be donating the staff for the swim so 100% of the money collected will be donated to the Red Cross and the North Shore Animal League America. For additional information, please contact Kim Harrison, Aquatic Supervisor, at (630) 372-7275, ext. 107.
