Pay to Play…Music That Is

Posted on Wednesday 3 August 2005

Earlier in July, “the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) filed 30 separate copyright infringement actions against nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in 15 states and the District of Columbia. These establishments have publicly performed the copyrighted musical works of ASCAP’s songwriter, composer and music publisher members without receiving their permission to do so, resulting in lost income for these music creators.”

This is an excerpt from a press release alerting businesses that ASCAP will file charges if publicly played music is not paid for.

Has your agency paid license fees to ASCAP or similar music licensing company? Did you know you had to pay for the music you play in your fitness centers, during your spinning classes, at open gym, etc.? How much are you paying for this right?

Let us know your experiences with ASCAP and purchasing the rights to play music at your agency.
