Sports management interns start at IPRA

Posted on Wednesday 30 May 2007

Brent Yepsen and Sean Ward have just started their summer internships with Illinois Park and Recreation Association this week. The pair have recently completed their college courses and just require the internship for graduation. This summer their main duty will be assisting in the coordination of the 2007 BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. We have asked the guys to share a little bit about themselves - but hopefully you will get the chance to work with them while volunteering at the BMW Championship.

Brent Yepsen -
Illinois State University
I am 23 years young from the beautiful and never overlooked Princeton, IL. I recently graduated from Illinois State University with a major in Parks and Recreation Administration. My current plan of action is to eventually use all of the experiences gained through college classes, internships, and work experiences to become the most successful recreation professional possible. I have a passion for sports, including my beloved Chicago White Sox, da Bears, and last but certainly not least, Tiger Woods. Some may say that I tend to be a little goofy from time to time, but trust me, it’s always harmless. I like to think that I have some of the best one-line jokes humanly possible, please feel free to inquire. Since interviewing with Mike Selep, I have been incredibly poised to work with everyone that I have had the pleasure of meeting, and also those I have yet to meet here at IPRA. I hope to not only be a responsible working partner this summer, but I also hope to gain life long friendships, and networking possibilities. I am already positive that the my career has taken an incredible leap forward with my employment at IPRA.

Sean Ward -
University of Illinois
I was highly involved in baseball and football while growing up in the city of Chicago. I attended Morgan Park High School located on the city’s South side. I played football all four years of high school and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. I went on to attend the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. A love for sports interested me into becoming a Recreation, Sport, Tourism major. Careers I am interested in are the following: Sports Coordinator for a park district, Sales/Marketing Rep for a sports team, or working in public relations for a sports team. While attending the University of Illinois I became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC. Key attributes are: organized, great time management skills, great communication and leadership skills, and a desire to learn all I possibly can. I chose to take an internship with IPRA because it is a great opportunity to get experience assisting in the coordination of a huge sporting event (BMW Championship golf tournament) and work with so many Illinois park districts. I look forward to working with IPRA and other outstanding professionals in this field!

Please help us welcome Brent and Sean…and don’t forget to volunteer for the BMW Championship coming up in September!

On behalf of the IPRA Wester…………BMW Championship Committee I would like to welcome this year’s interns. The time that you will spend with the IPRA preparing for this tournament will not only be a great learning experience, but also helps to make the total volunteer experience that much more enjoyable. This is proven by the high percentage of volunteers that come back each year. So thank you in advance for your help and have a great internship!

This is not only going to be an exciting new experience for the interns but for all of the volunteers as well. With its’ new sponsor and tournament format, the BMW Championship will host the top 70 players in the world. Due to this new format, the IPRA/BMW Committee has been asked to increase its’ responsibilities which in turn creates the need for more volunteers. Our job as IPRA volunteers is to help maintain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. There are also some pretty cool perks that come along with volunteering. I don’t want to steal all of Mike’s thunder, so if you’re interested in volunteering you may look up all of the information and sign up on the IPRA website. If you have already (or are going to) registered the Committee thanks you!
